VVV-Venlo vs Vitesse: Pre-match Review
VVV-Venlo
“Venlose Trots” failed in the 23/24 campaign and finished only 12th in the Eerste Divisie, although most experts ranked the team among the favorites. And it is not surprising, because Venlo played in the Eredivisie not so long ago and the 22/23 season can be called relatively good. The team stopped one step away from returning to the elite, losing in the playoffs to Almere City.
VVV-Venlo started the new championship with a new head coach: in the summer, the team took on John Lammers, who had been without a team for six months after working for Heracles.
In the debut match against ADO Den Haag they failed to win immediately. Venlo conceded a goal in the first half from Daryl van Mieghem, and it seems that only a lucky break prevented them from losing in the first game. The new head coach was saved from defeat in the first match by Steven Van Der Sloot, who earned a red card for ADO, and Konstantinos Doumtsios, who equalized in the 69th minute – 1:1 in the end, and a rather sluggish start from VVV-Venlo at the start of the championship.
SBV Vitesse
Vitesse is the team that experienced almost the most drama last season. The team was relegated from the Eredivisie for the first time in 35 years, all due to financial problems and violations of licensing rules, which is why they are starting the 24/25 season in the Eerste Divisie.
In particular, many important players left the team due to such problems: Carlens Arcus, Thomas Buitink, Amine Boutrah, Daan Huisman, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, Markus Schubert, Jordi Altena, Melle Meulensteen, Marco van Ginkel, Toni Domgjoni, Dominik Oroz, Eloy Room and Davy Pröpper all left the team.
The strengthening was not as effective, but the team managed to sign several players: Tomislav Gudelj, Mees Kreekels, Loek Postma, Justin Bakker, Dillon Hoogewerf, Alexander Büttner and Irakli Yegoian joined the team.
With such drastic changes, it is quite difficult to achieve results, but an attempt in the home match against Telstar was close to success. Vitess conceded from Danny Bakker in the 35th minute and the teams went into the break with a minimal advantage. In the second half, substitutes from John van den Bro played, in particular, Alexander Büttner made his debut assist, who gave an effective pass when Marcus Steffen scored in the 70th minute. And three minutes later, Tomislav Gudelj celebrated his debut goal.
However, they failed to maintain the positive result Bakker scored a double in the 81st minute, and Zakaria Eddahchouri brought Telstar a 2:3 victory before going to the VVV-Venlo – Vitesse match.
